I've written my own version of OpenClaw, but it's cloud-first so no setup or install. An early release, but I think its pretty neat and I'd appreciate any feedback: https://gipity.ai

Same. I appreciated the irony.

Free as in freedom, not free as in gratis

If i open source a project, but throw the code to the bottom of the mariannas trench is it open source? The issue with newspapers is that i need to pay for all of them individualy, they need to make a service like spotify where you subscribe and then the funds are allocated to each company dependant on what articles youre reading.

Craigslist has done a pretty good job resisting this.

Craigslist isn't free -- there are certain categories (like job postings in some areas) that are paid. This subsidizes the entire service.

Craigslist has indeed done very, very well. They've maintained a useful service, ad-free, for decades. Made a ton of money doing it, too.

Their secret is they did not try to grow at an insane rate. They have 50 employees and over $650 million in revenue. The revenue per employee is over $13 million.

The reason the giants are giant is because they are driven to become giant by people and investors who want to become billionaires.

Could Craigslist have been as successful if it launched today, instead of 1996?

The lack of bs website overhead on craigslist is honestly impressive. RAW HTML BABY!

Happy Thanksgiving! :)

Neat. This part:

> The machine was mechanically complex. It required a large technical support force,[2] and had a tendency to catch fire when overheated. Because of the problem, the Xerox company provided a "scorch eliminator", which was actually a small fire extinguisher, along with the copier.[1]

Sounds a lot like the Porsche 914 too. :)

As I understand it, the xerographic assemblies in copiers are charged to comically high voltages. The early power supplies were likely of inefficient design and magic smoked/fire a lot.

No, the high voltage was at very low current, just used to put an electrostatic charge on the selenium drum. Fires came from the fuser, where the toner is fused to the paper with heat. Paper jams could cause scorched paper and potentially a fire. Thermal fuses, switching from radiant heat to a hot roller, and lower melting point toner fixed that in laser printers.[1]

Never thought I'd see a 914 article at the #1 spot on Hacker News! :) Vroooom!

Use ninite.com!

iCam. :)

Super cool. This seems like it could be really good data to build some better visualizations.

Just playing with it now, but some quick feedback:

- Disable the lock screen while watching the visualization. I have to keep tapping it while music is playing.

- Is it possible to select the input source as the "speaker out" (or whatever ios calls it) rather than the microphone so only the music playing is analyzed rather than the microphone. My clicky keyboard is messing up the music visualization.

Nice work!

Good article. Here is a tip to reduce Amazon S3 costs:
