Doesn't ext[2,3,4] reserve 5% of the space on the disc for this very reason?

This can be adjusted with tune2fs -m <percentage> /dev/sda1

You can check the reserved blocks with sudo tune2fs -l /dev/sda1 | grep 'Reserved block count'
